| Pssst, hey, want a new take on the classic martini? Try the house favorite "Summer Hummer." In July of 2001, late one night after closing time, the signature martini came about when strawberry and citros Stoli vodkas were shaken (not stirred) with Cointreau triple sec from France and pink lemonade, then poured into a chilled martini glass and garnished with a plump strawberry. Voila, the South Bay's official summer martini was born! Side Door is known throughout the neighborhood for their cocktails with big flavor like the "Fly Me To The Moon," with watermelon and cranberry sweetness or the tropical "Code Blue" - another Side Door original. Oddly, it's fascinating to realize that so much flavor can fit in this glamorous "man cave-like" HotSpot. Side Door is small, chances are it's smaller than your living room but that's what makes it so, well you could say, charming and quaint. It's friendly staff and owner Lou will make suggestions on what drink a customer may like to try. The bar can be "bought" meaning for one night you and your friends can host an LMU graduation party here and man the bar! That is, after the staff literally trains the bartender-to-be in your party on the tricks of the trade. There's also no minimum amount to order when making a reservation (which is recommended for dates) and there's no cover. If a first date is in your immediate future, Side Door will give this type of setting: trendy cafe music (think New York, Barcelona), cozy navy blue sofas to lounge and share empanadas and crab cakes, and finally lavish color paintings (one of Frank Sinatra) to open up conversation about music and the fine arts. Now that's one classy date. |
