Jackie and Mack Robinson Memorial

100 N. Garfield Ave.
Pasadena, CA  91101
Site: N/A

Type: Sports

Raised in Pasadena, brothers Jackie and Mack Robinson were memorialized by the city for their virtuous athletic achievements for African-Americans in athletics. Of the giant-sized bronze busts, the left one is in tribute to Jackie. After attending junior college in Pasadena, Jackie enrolled at UCLA achieving success in various sports including football, basketball, track and baseball. Called up to play first base as a member of the then Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie famously broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball (and American sports in general) to pave the way for black athletes from Hank Aaron and Walter Payton, to Magic Johnson and Ken Griffey Jr. To the right, Mack Robinson's bust is a tribute to his brave silver medal performance in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany during the Third Reich's uprising. Tip: The memorial is on the corner of Holly and Garfield across from City Hall.
