| Picture 20th century artist Andy Warhol in Los Angeles, now envision his choice of evening recreation. The Standard Hotel in Downtown is full of neo-funky gimmicks like red vibrating pod beds, projected movie reels and magenta-pink lobby sofas which could all have easily been created by the pop art great. Beginning with the too-cool-for-you Rooftop Bar, where the beautiful and traveling lounge poolside on a sweltering Tuesday at noon, The Standard sets the bar unfairly high for alfresco lounging. So impressive is the setting, no matter the size of the ego, one immediately feels inferior to the city's imposing skyline when treading water in the Rooftop's heated pool. Sights abound 360-degrees from peering into office buildings across the way and views of the basin via telescope, to sly peeks of celebrities poolside on white "S-shaped" low-profile chairs. Diminishing the wait time drastically for entry is a must but fortunately made easy for hotel guests.
